SECRET AGENT: Summer travel tips from John Frenaye

By Sally Walker Davies
July 7th, 2008

John Frenaye - the travel agent / columnist for MSNBC - has come up with a great list of tips for planning summer travel, so I thought I’d share them with you this week - and give our Memphis agents a break from all the questions!

Frenaye says that as a single dad, he’s ”done my share of jet-setting with kids in tow, so I felt free to impart my wisdom.”  So he’s come up with a top 10 list for taking the stress out of family travel:

1. Involve the kids. Your ideal vacation may not be what your children have in mind. It’s a good idea to get the kids’ input at the very start of the planning process so they will have a stake in making things go right. Above all, make sure everyone is on board with the destination. European opera houses? Wait for your 50th anniversary! Another fantastic idea is to have the kids actually contribute financially to the vacation—pay the tolls, maybe buy a dinner one night, or simply shake out the piggy bank to help out. In my house, we empty our loose change jugs before a trip and that usually makes a big dent in our spending money!

2. Do your homework. The better your grasp on where you are going and what you want to do there, the more enjoyable the experience will be. You don’t need an itinerary carved in stone, but you really must have an outline. The Web is a great place to get up-to-date information, as are travel guidebooks. If you work with a travel professional, pick his or her brain; a good agent may have a better idea of what you want than you do. Give the kids some homework. Ask them to find three things that they want to do on vacation—and then make sure to work them in.

3. Build in some downtime. Flexibility is the key when traveling with kids. Everyone will have a better time if each has a chance to do his own thing, whether it’s reading a book or hitting the beach. “Alone time†is greatly underrated in family travel planning, as is “grown-up time,†so take advantage of a kids-only movie night to share a special dinner with your special someone. Remember, it is a vacation for the family—not just the kids or the parents.

4. Watch your budget. It’s easy to overspend while on vacation, but by keeping an eye out for incentives, discounts and other special deals, you can have a great time for less. Let your travel professional know of any special events or celebrations you want to include to make your trip more special. You can usually reign in the budget with an all-inclusive resort such as Breezes, or even a cruise. Be sure to look at the full picture and not just the cost of hotel and admissions.

5. Book smarter. Traveling in the off-season (or the almost off-season) can help rein in those costs and keep the crowds down. (If you make your escape during school time, remember to get a homework pack for the kids.) Also ask your travel pro to keep an eye out for family-friendly specials, which often are not advertised to the general public. These “agent-only†specials cross my desk many times a week. If you can deal with some heat, the Caribbean and Mexico has some fantastic deals in the summer—yes it is hurricane season, but what are the odds? But to be safe, insure your trip.

6. Lose the crowd. If you vacation at a busy time, look for ways to avoid the worst of the crowds. Here’s a trick: Go left when you enter — most people will go right. And go deep — most visitors stop at the first thing they see. This is an ideal strategy for the Disney resorts and it even works well at home in the grocery store!

7. Honor your elders. Older folks like the chance to be kids, too, so why not see if Grandmom or Grandpop wants to tag along, or even foot part of the bill. It is a fantastic opportunity for children to connect with an older generation and learn a little about times gone by. Reality check: This year’s college freshmen do not recall a U.S. president before Bill Clinton. Many travel suppliers are realizing this growing market and have products that span many generations. One of the best is Tauck Bridges. (www.family-travel.tauck.com)

8. Expect the unexpected. I wish I could say that every vacation goes off without a hitch. But the truth is that very few do. The plane is late, someone left the oven on, your room is not ready, someone gets ill, the rental car gets a flat tire, the guy sitting next to you really smells. To help with the rough patches, bring along some activity packs for everyone (adults can be just as whiny and miserable as kids, if not more so). Be sure to include some food and water for those sensitive ears if you are flying. Also, if you are investing a lot of money in your vacation and don’t want to lose it all, protect it with travel insurance.

9. Reap your reward. If you are traveling with your kids, you might as well seek out reward programs that fit your family’s lifestyle today. No sense in accumulating points to buy business class airfare when what you want are free sodas, a souvenir T-shirt and a chance to meet Cinderella. For example, Disney has a flexible rewards credit card, the Disney Rewards Visa Card from Chase, which provides interest-free financing when you book your Disney vacation or cruise with the card, as well as all kinds of benefits to families planning a Disney vacation.

10. Get a passport. It will be required for any foreign travel. Besides, it is the ultimate identification and it is valid for 10 years (five years for kids under 16). Do it now. Download the paperwork here. Don’t make me tell your mother.

Cavalgada

Liliana | Filosofando, Minha Vida Na Praia, São Miguel do Gostoso, Viagens | Sunday, July 20th, 2008

A sensação é maravilhosa.

Pois bem, comprei o buggy ontem.

Fazendo bonito.

Nossa! A sensação é incrível!

O buggy chacoalha demais.

E você vai solta dentro do carro.

Why Import Campaigns From One
PPC Company To Another?

Writing by Brick Marketing on Tuesday, 29 of July , 2008 at 8:37 am Comments (1)

You may know that you have the ability to import your pay per click campaigns from Google into Yahoo! or MSN and vice-versa. There are plenty of places online that show you how to do this. Rather than cover that route here I’d like to discuss why you’d want to do this.

Here it is in a nutshell:

  • It saves time
  • Expand your reach into the marketplace
  • Explore other options
  • Capitalize on a successful campaign

If you know that you want to export your PPC campaign into another system then using the import features at each of the search engines will allow you to save time rather than trying to do it manually. But don’t make the transfer and then stop your campaign at the old search engine. If your PPC campaign wasn’t successful at Google it will likely not be successful at Yahoo! or MSN either.

The best time to make such an import is when you’ve had a successful run of a campaign at one search engine. If your PPC campaign met with unwarranted success at Google then you might want to export it to Yahoo! and MSN, where your bids for clicks will be lower, and make a go at it there. Success at one search engine doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be successful elsewhere, but there is a good chance that if you did something right at Google then you can take that success and build on it at Yahoo! or MSN. It’s just a matter of making the transition.

Be prepared to make some tweaks. There will not be a one-to-one transition. You may have to delete negative keywords or make other adjustments during the importation process. That’s OK as long as you keep the essence of your campaign intact.

MSN adCenter Adds New Features To Analytics Interface

Writing by Brick Marketing on Wednesday, 30 of July , 2008 at 10:37 am Leave a comment

Yesterday, MSN adCenter announced that it has updated its analytics interface and added new features. Here are some of the features added to adCenter Analytics:

  • Dashboard Changes - New changes to the dashboard at MSN adCenter Analytics include a fresh new look highlighting the following default views:
    • Traffic summary
    • Page views
    • Visits
    • Top pages
    • Top keywords
    • Top referring websites
  • Path Reports - Path Reports allows you to track how users get to a certain page on your website. In other words, what link path do they take to arrive at Page B if they started on Page A.
  • Top Entry & Exit Pages - Do you know which pages on your site users enter into and exit from? This feature allows you to get visibility on that data.
  • Treemap Tracking - This feature allows you to see who is using your website from an age and gender viewpoint. Very useful feature!

What do you think? Is MSN adCenter making useful changes to its analytics product?
