bluebells bad case
Left with a bad case of Bluebells
(from the EP The Bluebells, Sire Records 1983)
This version of the Bluebells’ “Cath” is an odd little anomaly, but I didn’t learn that until considerably later. Like most EPs released by US record labels in the early 80s, The Bluebells consists of songs the Scottish new wave folkies had released on UK singles for the past couple of years; American labels always being allergic to stand-alone singles, EPs seemed like a good introduction at the time. When Sisters came out not quite a year later, I noticed that the version of “Cath” on it was a slightly different (and to my ears inferior) mix, which I put down to another annoying tendency of record labels at the time, the inability to leave a kick-ass single alone, resulting in botched album mixes that usually kinda sucked. But around a decade later, I ran across and purchased the original UK single of “Cath” (the Bluebells released so few records that I don’t mind being a completist) and discovered that it was fundamentally identical to the version on Sisters. This led me to wondering what the deal was with the version on the US single (yep, I have that too) and the American EP. Because, if months of reading Little Hits hasn’t already made this crystal clear, I am a big fuckin’ geek.
Purchasing a UK CD compilation called The Singles Collection that had some anomalies and extended mixes on it led me to the suspicion that the origin of the American mix of “Cath” is a rather botched extended version that was originally released on the UK 12″. That version isn’t actually very good; after opening with the song’s chorus, it leads into an extra verse that really saps the song’s energy. However, it does have the defining element of this version of the song, a vocals-drums breakdown on the second chorus that’s not on the original single version and which has always been my favorite part of the song. Doing a quick A-B comparison just now (remember, BFG), I think this mix is the harmonica fanfare intro of the original single mix edited onto the last 2:50 of the extended version. So there you go.
Incidentally, if any of our UK readers are interested: the other songs on the Sire EP are the single mixes of “Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool” and “Sugar Bridge,” the same version of “The Patriot Game” that’s on Sisters and a lovely Elvis Costello-produced ballad called “Aim In Life” that’s one of my favorite things they ever did. Other bits of trivia: Bluebells bassist Lawrence Donegan (the son of skiffle legend Lonnie Donegan) left the group to join Lloyd Cole and the Commotions, and the group’s biggest hit, the countrified fiddle tune “Young At Heart,” was originally recorded on the first album by Bananarama, which featured lead singer Robert Hodgens’ girlfriend Siobhan Fahey. Bananarama’s version of the song is actually a lot better than the Bluebells’, I think.

PodCamp Nano
Have you heard about PodCamp Nano? Neither had I until the ride home yesterday, staring at my iPod while stuck in traffic. That 60 GB 5G iPod sure is nice, but sometimes you want something smaller and lighter for running or whatever.
I think the same is true for conferences, so I’m tossing an idea out here. PodCamp Nano, with the 2-2-2 rule.
+ 2 hours
+ 2 sessions
+ 2 drinks
and you’re done. Essentially a meetup, but with defined sessions like a full-size PodCamp. Because it’s a small and light affair, you won’t need much in the way of sponsorships beyond a place to gather and maybe someone to buy drinks.
Same rules apply as PodCamp - no mega-commercial pitches, no charge to attend, everything licensed under Creative Commons.
PodCamp Nano. We’ll see how that works out. (yes, I just bought PodCampNano.com and PodCampNano.org)

Olympic Games Shape the Way People Use New Technology
08/13/2008, 2 weeks 3 days ago
Associated Press reports today about how the Olympic Games influence the way people use new technology heavier than ever before. What’s more important, for some of the people the Oplympics serve as an incentive to actually try some new technologies for the first time. For example, half of all the people who used their mobile devices to consume video content actually made it for the first time in their lives.
NBC Universal with its broad online video coverage of the Olympics is said to be using the Games as some kind of a research lab to track adoption of new technologies by users. The statistics for Monday is very interesting: over 2 million people consumed some content on NBC Olympics website with over 476 thousand people doing it via a mobile device.
But predictably, tradition viewing on TV remains the most popular with 95% of people sticking to this method and only the remaining 5% venturing online for their share of video content from Beijing. Of course, it is absolutely understandable given the fact that quality of the video materials available online is much worse than what you can normally get on TV.
What is somewhat disappointing is that in addition to teaching people to use their cell phones to consume video content NBC also teaches everyone what Microsoft Silverlight technology is and how excellent it is to consume online video with this technology. Getting an exclusive with NBC for their extensive coverage of the Games was probably the best thing Microsoft could do to ensure brand awareness and adoption of Silverligh. But it still feels rather uncomfortable simply because normally users also want some freedom in choosing what technology they use instead of being pushed in the right direction.

joker batman magic trick dark knight villain hype
This post relates to: Joker, Batman, What did you think of The Dark Knight?
Joker made the movie for me, and I don’t even think it was the hype either about it. He was just amazing, I can’t get over that seen with the “Magic Trick”. I can’t wait to go see it again. As I said in the Batman movies thread, Joker is the best villain to appear in a comic based movie so far.
